Camooweal to Cloncurry

10/04/2010

Had a swim this morning before we made our way out onto the main street to find out what was happening in this place, what were the attractions and to investigate the character of the town. We headed to the museum as a place to start, opening hours were 9.00 and being 9.30 I hought that we may expect someone to be home. We then went to the community notice board as it did have a section called Things To Do, it was blank. So we did the next most interest thing and stand in the middle of the main street and what for some traffic.

On our way to Cloncurry, through Mount Isa, the scenery changes from the long flat plains to the ranges and craggy rocks.
We stopped in Mount Isa to get supplies and fuel, fuel economy is back on track at 22 litres/100klms and we paid $1.25.9 per litre, it is a lot busier here.
On our way to Cloncurry we visited the ghost town of Mary Kathleen, this was a mining town that was mining uranium up until around 1983. At this time the mine was closed and the whole town was sold, they then moved all the building away to various sites. To now drive around Mary K and see a whole town void of buildings is quite surreal. We got onto the road and landed in Cloncurry, around 300 klms today. We are rushing a bit as we are going over territory we have seen before so once we get to the Hughenden Highway we will start to take our time. It is our intention to get to Rollinston just north of Townsville and spend a few days before heading south.
